Alfonso Ossorio, who was inspired by both the detailed paintings of the Northern Renaissance and the anxious, dream-like imagery of the European Surrealists,

created this portrait of actress Ida Lupino (American, 1918-1995) just after serving in the U.S. Army during World War II. We do not know the circumstances for

his unusual portrait. Perhaps Ossorio was simply a fan of Lupino’s films, in which she played the tough leading lady alongside such actors as Humphrey Bogart and

Edward G. Robinson.
