Here, a young girl reclines on her father’s lap as she knowingly gazes at the photographer-and therefore viewer-with a directness that belies her years. The intimacy of the depiction is colored by Mann’s relationship to the sitters, family acquaintances from Rockbridge County, Virginia, where the artist was born and continues to live
