Join curator Dr. Jane’a Johnson and Dr. Emily A. Owens, Emily A. Owens, Assistant Professor of History at Brown University, for a conversation in the gallery on the themes of self-presentation, wealth production, portraiture, and personhood in the exhibition Past Made Present: Dutch Shadows in the Black Atlantic. The long and relatively unacknowledged shadow the Dutch cast over early modern history and art history is explored through contemporary and historical works including paintings, prints, photographs, textiles, and works of jewelry.

Faculty are encouraged to register for the faculty workshop with Dr. Johnson at 12 pm on Friday, and students to attend the conversation for students at 1 pm on Friday.

Jane'a Johnson is Artistic Director at Foam Fotografiemuseum Amsterdam and former RISD Assistant Professor of Theory of Art + Design and research fellow at the Center for Social Equity and Inclusion (SEI).
Dr. Emily A. Owens researches and teaches about US slavery, the legal history of race and sexual violence, and the intellectual history of American feminisms. She is most interested in the ways that massive cultural, legal and economic systems shape intimate life across different historical moments.
