Introduction
Since the 1980s, the contemporary art world has experienced such a proliferation of movements that it is impossible to associate one, or even two, stylistic trends with the recent era. Far from following a dominant mode, contemporary artists have been pursuing a single credo, that of being true to their own individuality and expressive need.
The exhibition in these galleries highlights recently acquired contemporary art on paper in diverse working methods, perspectives, and styles. Through both abstract and figurative means, the artists comment on the external world, as well as on their own inner lives. Many of the pieces are about creating a place for the individual within society, whether through consideration of the world's diverse cultures and their histories or of gender and race issues.
From abstraction to narrative, this wide assortment of works pays tribute to the contemporary artists who help us make sense of our Iives through a wide range of visual language.
