Maurice Prendergast was one of the founding members of the Eight (an artists' group that also included John Sloan, Robert Henri, George Luks, George Bellows, Childe Hassam, Ernest Lawson, and William Glackens) and a participant in the Armory Show. Much influenced by the watercolors of Cezanne, Prendergast's impressionistic style was unique among American artists. In this work, the artist explores watercolor's ability to blend harmoniously with other media, creating a vibrant and shimmering image. Prendergast's watercolors were some of the most adventurous of his generation.
