The Portland artist Codman was trained as a painter of signs, clock faces, and other decorations and took up easel painting around 1828. This early work depicts the encampment of the Rifle Rangers at Joy's Mount on the Portland harbor, and was probably painted as an ornament for the Rifle Ranger's armory in Boston.
