This quietly intimate painting depicts the German actor Hanna Schygulla, best known for her roles in the 1970s films of Rainer Werner Fassbinder, contemplating herself in a mirror. Schygulla is frequently a subject of Dufresne’s paintings, and here the scene suggests our often intense emotional identifications with, and erotic feelings for, celebrities and other iconic figures.
