Creased, seamed, and accompanied by lists and notations, this drawing conveys a sense of intimacy. A range of motifs is visible, from plant and animal patterns to the ordinary-looking home that repeats a few times throughout the sheet. Clements’s notes further allow a glimpse into her thinking, including the inscription at center right: “I even knew she wouldn’t come the first night but I sat there, grinding it out . . . and then she walked in out of the moonlight.” Fractured into multiple lines of thought, the drawing seems to reveal-however opaquely-an inner monologue.
