The three smokestacks of the Manchester Street Generating Station—formerly Narragansett Electric Company—are immediately recognizable to many Rhode Islanders. The station is quietly situated along the Providence River, its architecture handsomely concealing the gas-burning electric generators that provide electricity for the city. Natural-gas power stations contribute significantly to global greenhouse-gas emissions. In Salvatore Mancini’s long-exposure black and white photograph, the structure becomes a glowing hothouse of energy production, electric light pouring from its tall, arched windows.
