Collision
Introduction
This group exhibition presents exhilarating juxtapositions of artworks and processes that collide, overlap, and bump into one another. Embracing flexibility and open-endedness, the result is a vibrant environment that echoes the chaos and cultural loss created by the insistent incursion of the new. Inspired by Robert Rauschenberg’s Combines and his belief that the world can be viewed as a “gigantic painting,” guest curator and abstract painter Jackie Saccoccio, along with sixteen other artists, selected works and installed them in whatever manner they chose. Several artists worked directly on the gallery walls. The show’s location in the Lower Farago Gallery - a space encountered by RISD Museum visitors as they enter on Benefit Street - stimulated some artists to examine architectural concerns about how building façades, entryways, walls, and ceilings function. Incorporating improvisation and collaboration, Collision is an experiment in exhibitionmaking that values personal contributions while at the same time the individual artworks become part of a larger, communal endeavor.
