This dynamic image of the Nachi waterfall captures photographer Tomohiro Muda’s reverence for nature and his engagement with religious sites around the world. Located in Japan’s Wakayama prefecture, Nachi Falls has served as a pilgrimage destination and an important site of worship for many different Japanese belief systems since ancient times. This work marries the modern media of photography with the hanging scroll, a format that has been used in East Asia for centuries.
