Its exterior adorned with scrolling gold vines and the crest of the Toyotomi warrior clan, this exquisite Japanese miniature palanquin was likely made for Doll Festival celebrations. Its interior is decorated with delicate ink paintings. As an item for display, it would have been exhibited with dolls and other miniature accessories and furnishings. During the Edo period (1615–1868), full-size palanquins typically were used to carry high-status people.
